It has been a while since I have put out an update. I have been camping for the last week. Camping was a major test for my metabolism and will power. I ate pretty well most of the time but indulged in some of my favourite camping snacks. I ate Smores, chocolate covered raisins, marshmallows, chips, popcorn and obviously had some beer. I came home expecting to have gained some weight but to my surprise I still weigh the same. I am pretty sure that my metabolism is working well and if I add in some regular cardiovascular exercise 3 times a week, I should be able to eat without concern of gaining weight forever.

I am going to continue eating well in terms of the Dr. Bernstein diet, meaning mostly lean meat and vegetables. I have grown to enjoy them more than my old favourites. I ate some McDonalds on the way home from my camping trip, 2 Filet-o-Fish and some fries, and absolutely felt horrible the rest of the night. The amount of fat and grease in the food was a complete shock to my system I think and I felt like I poisoned myself. I actually thought that I missed eating fast food but after that experience I know that it is not something I want in my life anymore. I will definitely avoid fast food from now on.

I am still doing my push up and sit up routine each week. I am coaching my son’s soccer team again this year which will get me running a couple nights a week. I also plan on doing some jogging 3 times a week in the morning.

Anyways, though I would throw up and update. There have been quite a few people who have contacted me regarding the Dr. Bernstein Diet who were doing it or considering doing it, I would love to hear from you guys. I am curious to see how you are doing.

Cheers.

I just completed 15 weeks on the Dr Bernstein Diet. I am on week 4 of the maintenance portion of the diet where I gradually increase the amount of food I intake.

Since I started maintenance, I have been “cheating” quite a bit. I have had a few beer here and there, pizza a couple of times and a few other treats but in smaller portions than I used to eat or drink. Guess what, my weight has not increased at all, if anything I am still losing weight. I still eat my vegetables and lean meat just in larger portions and then have snacks here and there. The one thing I haven’t tried eating yet is sweets. I am starting to think that sugars/carbs are the biggest problem in any over weight persons diet. So, I think I am just going to give them up forever. I can live without a chocolate bar, but have a hard time not eating a big cheese burger now and again.

I am still continuing to do my pushups and situps daily, gradually increasing the amount each week. I actually got me some cardio tonight too, me and my wife and another couple hit the tennis court for a good ole sweat. I will probably wake up a pound lighter tomorrow.

Anyways, thought I would throw out an update. Check out my measurements if you are interested.

If you have had some success losing some weight or even failures, I would definately like to hear about it. Drop me a comment or send me an email.

Cheers.

So it has been a while since I posted last, I have been super busy with my life. I am still here though and still on the Dr. Bernstein Diet. I am currently on week 3 of the maintenance program which means unlimited vegetables, 10 ounces of meat, 2 portions of bread product (2 slices of whole wheat) and 1 piece of fruit a day. Let me tell you though, I have been eating quite a bit more than that and some stuff I shouldn’t be eating at all.

Where have I gone a stray you ask? Well, I have eaten popcorn a few times with butter of course. I have had some potato chips and a few adult beverages. Here’s the good news, my weight didn’t really change. Each week I have been weighing in and staying around 177ish. If my weight increases too much I will just cut back the next week. I introduced some rice back into my life this week as well. I ate some today so I will see what the results are tomorrow.

Another side effect of eating, I am back to using the bathroom more than twice a week. Sweet! This makes me feel a bit more normal. I am planning on getting my drink on this Saturday, big UFC event and some poker after. I will definitely be checking the scale come Monday. I am hoping though that my weight will be unaffected.

I have been saying for months that I am going to start exercising but haven’t really committed too much, I definitely need to though, my cardio is lacking huge. One thing I have been doing though is push-ups and crunches every day for the last month. This has helped strengthen my core a lot. I am surprised at how much my chest has grown in the last month. Not sure about the old gut, still a bit of fat on top, hard to see through it! I will definitely continue this routine though, my kids and wife have also joined in which is always good. It’s nice to see your good habits being passed on to your children.

Anyways, I update my measurements for anyone interested.

Thanks for all the comments and emails guys; I definitely like hearing your stories out there! One word of caution to all you strict dieters, DON’T give in to any temptations you will set yourself WAY back. You definitely don’t want to come out of ketosis. If you are having problems with urges to eat, you HAVE to change your routine. Keep yourself busy, do something. Create a Blog that will suck some time up!

This past Monday, 3 days ago, was the last day of the “Strict Diet” portion of the Dr. Bernstein Diet for me. I think I could lose another 5-10 pounds of fat but I am going to do it through exercise now. As of last night I have lost 52 pounds, which puts me at 177 pounds.

Now that I have started on the maintenance program there are some changes to my portions. I still basically eat the same foods except that I can eat unlimited vegetables and 10 ounces of protein a day now. On the strict diet I could only eat 16 ounces of vegetables and 7 ounces of protein a day. My bread product intake stays the same (4 melba toast a day) and my fruit intake decreases to 1 piece a day.

Anyways, just thought I would throw out an update.

Good luck to everyone on the diet!

I have lost 49 pounds as of tonight on the Dr Bernstein Diet. All the sacrifice has really paid off over the last 11 weeks. I feel great, no more sleepless nights, heart burn, acid reflux or sweating for no reason. I was just looking at my before pictures and WOW what a change. I definately feel better about image now.

One problem I have though is my clothing looks absolutely rediculous on me now. I haven’t gone shopping for new clothes yet because I wasn’t sure when I would be happy with my weight so I have pushed it off until now. Thankfully the weather has been great and I can wear shorts because all my pants are way to big.

Over the last week I have had a few moments where I had a few bites of stuff I shouldn’t be biting although it didn’t stop me from losing any weight. I ate a couple potato chips and some sausage (Turkey mind you).

I have started to do situps and pushups every day now to kind of ease into things. Oh, pushups are way way easier for me to do now. Lifting almost 50 pounds off your body sure makes moving your body much easier. I should see about chin ups, I use to hang from the monkey bars at the park with my kids and it felt like my arms were going to be ripped off, now I am sure it will be a different story.

Anyways, if anyone is interested I have updated my measurements. I have been debating throwing up before and after pictures but haven’t decided. What do you guys think?

74 days into the Dr. Bernstein Diet and I have hit my original goal weight of 180 pounds. This is a big accomplishment for me but I think I still have some more weight to lose. I mentioned a few days ago that I had some trouble areas that are shrinking slower than I would like, my “love handles” and my stomach. I have paid for another 2.5 weeks so I think I will do another 1.5 weeks for sure and make a decision about the last week then.

5 years ago after I had finished school and worked at a desk for a few years, I had packed on some weight, roughly 40 pounds. I found the “Body for Life” program and for about 5 months I followed it. I again had pretty good success. I lost the 40 pounds was lifting weights 3 days a week and running 5 kilometers 3 days a week. Best of all I was eating 6 times a day. I ended up around 185 pounds and was happy with that. Now I am 180 pounds and still not happy with my fat stores. I have obviously lost some lean muscle over the years. I am not sure if it was from this diet or just lack of exercise that has done it but a definite loss.

Sorry for rambling but my point is that if you want to stay fit you can’t sit on your ass, you need to exercise and you need to build muscle. This Dr B Diet is just the beginning for me, I have lost the excess weight, now I need to grow my muscles and strengthen my cardiovascular system.

Another issue I have in my life is smoking. I smoked in the past for about 10 years, then quit for 5 years, then smoked when I drank or on special occasions. When I started this diet, I guess to help with cravings, I picked up smoking again. It has been 2 months of it. I will be giving it up completely after I have completed the Dr. B Diet.

Anyways, I just felt like spewing my thoughts out there.

Week 10 has come and gone now. The time has passed by quite quickly the last month or so which makes losing weight a little more bearable. I weighed in at 183 pounds on my scale last night which means 45 pounds shed thus far. I have also lost more than 6 inches from my waist and almost 5 inches from my chest.

I seem to be struggling a bit with the fat around my stomach and love handles. It looks to me like that fat there is really stubborn. I may have to quit the diet before all the fat stored there is gone because I don’t want to lose to much more weight. My arms, legs and face have really trimmed down.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been bumping into people I don’t see often, say every month or so and they all have been like wow, you have lost a lot of weight. It is definitely satisfying to know that people notice. Another thing though is people really suck too, they try and get you to cheat and they are pretty persistent about it. I have had to get angry a couple times when people are like “Oh just have one piece”. I don’t know if its jealousy or what. My girlfriend mentioned to a girl she knows that I lost 40 plus pounds in 9 weeks and instantly the other girl thought I was doing drugs, specifically meth. It’s funny how people react.

I updated my measurements page for anyone who is interested.

If you are wondering what I am eating these days it hasn’t changed but here is yesterdays in take.

Breakfast
1 Caffeinated Coffee
1 Orange

Lunch
100 grams of Chicken Breast
8 ounces of orange peppers
4 Melba Toast
1 Tablespoon of 95% fat free cream cheese

Dinner
1 liter of Campbells Chicken Broth (25% less sodium)
8 ounces of onion and celery
100 grams of Chicken Breast

Snack
1 Orange

Today is the completion of my 9TH week on the Dr. Bernstein Diet. This morning at the clinic they weighed me in at 186 pounds and they initially weighed me in at 229 pounds. That is a difference of 43 pounds. I have to say that I am really impressed with my results. That’s an average of 4.77 pounds a week.

The Dr. B Diet is pretty easy to do as long as your mind is ready and you like starving pretty much all the time. Just kidding its not that bad but you definately need some will power. I found losing 4-5 pounds a week really motivating to continue.

I was hoping to be complete the diet by this time as it is pretty expensive but I think I am going to have to do a couple more weeks. That will be another $300 plus dollars.

I updated my measurements if anyone is interested.

Anyways, thought I would throw out an update to anyone who is listening.

Today was the end of my sixth week on the Dr. Bernstein Diet and I am happy to say that I have broken the 200 pound mark. I officially weighed in at 197 pounds this evening. I have lost 2.5 inches off of my chest and 4 inches off of my waist. It has been a pretty good week.

This morning at the clinic, the doctor gave me a pinch test because I have dropped below their suggested BMI and he gave me the go ahead to lose at least another 10 pounds. I feel I still need to lose around 15-20 pounds but won’t know for sure until I lose some more weight.

As far as how I am feeling goes, I am great. My only complaint is that I am completely bored with my food. Although, I tend to make the same things every single day because it is easy to maintain. When you come from eating out most of your life, “easy to maintain” is definitely what you need.

For anyone who is just starting out on the Dr. B Diet make sure you have “allowed’ foods on hand all the time that are preferably prepared. I have had a few occasions where I didn’t have any food I could eat around and its sucks when you’re starving to have to go to the grocery store then come home and prepare and cook food.

One thing that I have begun to enjoy quite a bit is Club Soda. I drink probably 6-8 a day. It seems to make me feel better. I have tried all the brands and they all taste the same so I have started to just buy the Superstore Presidents choice brand as they are the least expensive.

Sorry I have stopped posting everyday; I find that I don’t really have anything new or interesting to report each day. I will try and post my results as much as I see fit.

I would love to hear some other people’s results, if anyone is interested in sharing please leave a comment or email me at webmaster@drbdietguy.com.

I have updated my measurements if anyone is interested.

Here is my food intake for today and pretty much everyday for the last 6 weeks.

Breakfast
1 multivitamin
1 Glucosamine Chondroitin (Natural Joint Repair)
3 Potassium Pills
1 orange

Lunch
100 grams of chicken breast
8 ounces of red, orange, green, yellow peppers
1 Glucosamine Chondroitin (Natural Joint Repair)
4 Melba toast
1 tablespoon of 95% fat free cream cheese

Dinner
100 grams of chicken breast

I read over the maintenance program today. They lay out your 8 weeks of food intake after you reach your goal weight. The maintenance program is basically the same food as the strict diet except that the portions change. After week 4 you start introducing more carbohydrates such as pasta. The maintenance programs states that NO ALCOHOL is allowed which is a bit disappointing to me. I was really looking forward to having a beer.

I am feeling pretty good today, no complaints. I have to buck up another $600 tomorrow for the next 4 weeks; hopefully I will be done the strict diet by then. I am looking forward to being able to exercise as well. My buddy and I play a lot of tennis in the summer.

Most of my clothes are getting pretty sloppy on me now. My belt is on the smallest hole and my jeans are almost falling off which is great. I figure that in 1 month I will have to replace most of my clothes.

Anyways, here is my food intake for the day.

Breakfast
1 Orange

Lunch
100 grams of chicken breast
8 ounces of peppers
4 Melba toast
1 tablespoon of 95% fat free cream cheese

Dinner
100 grams of chicken breast
8 ounces of onion, mushroom and celery
1 liter of Campbells Chicken Broth

Snack
8 strawberries
1 cup Jello Light
